Cold and Frosty mornings
Life on Summit continues much the same. Everyone has fallen into routines and the only real disruption comes from the weather. Now that we are in August, the sun falls low to the horizon at night and first sunset is fast approaching. It is starting to get cold at night, there is more freezing fog around, and there is frost in the morning.
Wednesday was a blistering cold day. High winds and overcast skies dropped the temperature into the -20s C with windchill, so the we had an administrative day in the Big House to catch up on documentation. It means that all of our equipment has been re-snowed in though, so we have some digging to day today.
Yesterday was a glorious sunny day with almost no wind, so I spend the day by a ice core hole that was drilled by a previous team (Saltzman) using a winch to lower a radio emitter into the hole and raise it up slowly. It was so warm I didn't even need a coat (-5 C. It is very strange how you acclimatize to temperature). I got to sit on my snowmobile, in the sunshine, listening to music. A very pleasant way to spend the day. It was also very cool to watch the fog roll in over the ice sheet as the sun started to drop in the sky.
Today, we are in and out of north winds, so it could be a frustrating day.
Saturday marks the point where we only have 2 weeks left at Summit (I have been up here almost three weeks). I think my body has finally managed to get used to the altitude!!
